Our History“For the glory of God and the advancement of His Kingdom”
The Society of Free Will Baptist Church was organized on October 3, 1832. Rev. Eli Hannibal was the first pastor and there were 32 members. Meetings were held in the schoolhouse at the northwest corner of Morton and Redman Roads until the Union Church was built. The Baptists and Methodists shared the use of the building. The first Covenant Meeting was held December 28, 1833. In 1889 a committee was appointed to raise funds to build a new church, the cost $2,610. The church was dedicated January 15, 1890. In 1895 the village name was changed to Morton and the church was then known as the Morton Free Will Baptist Church. The church was incorporated in 1913 and changed from Free Will Baptist to American Baptist. At the time of the 100th anniversary in 1932 there were 150 active members. |
